In the year 2000, BD Biosciences opened the doors of its European Technology Center (ETC) in Basel, Switzerland, with the goal to better support complex flow cytometry analysis and sorter technology. The success of the ETC led to the relocation to a much larger space in Heidelberg in 2010. Now, in 2021, we are looking at a changing environment in single-cell analysis. Even though technology still plays a very important role, the emphasis is moving towards producing scientific results out of highly complex single-cell data, created using a multitude of technologies. Nowadays, one should not only look at the flow cytometer or the cell sorter, which can measure an ever-increasing number of colors, but much broader. This includes factors like reagents and dyes but also newer technologies like single-cell multi-omics. Furthermore, the enormous amount of data resulting from using these technologies needs to be analyzed and tools for data analysis and data mining become an important part of the equation.
To reflect this change, we decided to rename the ETC to the European Center for Single-Cell Solutions (ESS). The center will provide support in the areas of multi-color panel design (BD reagents and dyes), instrument technology (BD FACSymphony™ family of instruments), multi-omics applications (BD Rhapsody) and high parameter data analysis (FlowJo™ and SeqGeq™). In this way, we will be strengthening support to our customers by focusing on the total BD Single-Cell Solution. We have expanded the team with several specialists from the different areas which we will introduce to you in upcoming newsletters.
So, stay tuned to learn more about how we can help you with your single-cell applications.
